a difference" report. more than 70 days now since hurricane sandy, still a lot of this region is in the dark with so many homes destroyed, condemned or not near ready to be lived in. that's where the volunteers from a charity group called "operation blessing" come in. you're about to see what they can do. nbc's rehema ellis has our "making a difference" report tonight from breezy point queens, part of coastal new york city. >> reporter: this breezy point neighborhood was devastated all at once by sandy. but the recovery is happening one home at a time. for three weeks, hundreds of volunteers have been working to rebuild this house for retired grandparents, jean and burt metz, who were told only the floors and walls were being rebuilt. 72 days ago, 4 feet of floodwater rushed in, leaving behind dangerous mold. how much work did you do on the house? >> we did this house from stud to completion. here is a couple, gives back to their community, two-time cancer survivor. then on top of it, their home was flooded. >> reporter: operation blessing has helped 400 homeowners in breezy point, recruitin

leveraging the tragedy at sandy hook is despicable. >> gregg: elizabeth pran joins us inside the gun show where some members of the city council are fighting to ban gun shows entirely. how are lawmakers planning to ban the gun shows legally? >> reporter: in order for them to ban them legally, city officials say the only one to enforce the ordnance ordinance in place that no guns can be brat on city property and they claim here is owned by the city. they say they own the property and therein lies the dispute. they say gun shows is forum for illegal trade. >> i have no power at the city level to block all gun shows in the city of ashville. the only place we regulate is where people can possess weapons. >> reporter: gun distributors tell us it's perfectly legal the way guns are sold here and same way they are sold in stores. >> gregg: how are people react to all of this? >> reporter: if actions speak louder than words and we are seeing that in sheer numbers, thousands of people are turning up at gun shows. there was a line about three hours before the doors opened here yesterday. one dealer

and the events in sandy hook was overwhelming. it was a slaughter of the innocence. the crucial turning point of what ought to be a dialogue in three areas and the assault weapons and the high capacity magazine clips should be what we will do about mental health care services for people in this nation. i applaud the vice president and the commission. it appears to be far reaching in scope and my hope is what they will recommend is that we do ban assault weapons and the high capacity clips and we take a look at the mental health services in our schools and professionals and providing greater access to mental health services. to take a look at the loopholes and also we ought to begin. i don't have specifics, but we ought to begin about what are the culturings that glorifies violence. >> he said it doesn't have to be all or nothing and we would rather do something than nothing. we have advocates who point to the same issues with violence and movies and the television industry and the video games. all of those are warranted of our attention and doesn't need to be all or nothing. that seems to be

. on the other hand, in this case it's art. >> reporter: after the shooting at sandy hook elementary school that killed 20 children and 6 adults three other gun shows in the area were cancelled. >>> in aurora, colorado, police are investigating the circumstances around a deadly six-hour standoff. police shot and killed a gunman who was on the second floor of a house. they only five-day after the gunman shot at officers. police also found the bodies of three other people inside. authorities say a woman managed to escape uninjured earlier in that standoff. >>> tomorrow the man accused of hoping fire in a crowded aurora, colorado movie theater will appear in court for preliminary hearing. james holmes is charged with killing 12 people and wounded dozens more. this week the public may hear about some of the evidence against him for the very first time. prosecutors are expected to call scores of witnesses. the judge will determine if there's enough evidence forever holmes to stand trial. his attorneys are expected to present a diminished mental capacity defense. >>> gun violence is going to be a
. >> lester, thank you. it's been a rough few months for a couple on staten island. superstorm sandy destroyed their home of 43 years. adding insult to injury, as they are battling their insurance company now, they are furious their home was shown in a television ad for allstate. here's michelle franzen. >> reporter: it is a few sheila and dominic still can't belive is real. >> it's our home. our white picket fence. >> reporter: the couple's staten island home where they lived more than 40 years and raised four children was destroyed by sandy. >> but the grandkids would come over and that was their clubhouse. they loved it. >> reporter: their possessions, mementos and investment gone. the couple says their insurance company, allstate, is refusing to pay their full claim. instead offering them a $10,000 payout for their house. >> we didn't sign it. we didn't cash it. we don't even want $10,000. that's a joke. >> reporter: at the same time allstate recently featured their destroyed home in a television ad, thanking employees who were also affected by the storm. >> some of them lost their houses.
surprised by the ferosity of the debate? >> the sandy hook massacre is one of the worst mass shootings in modern history. 20 school children murdered by a deranged young man whose mother had six is weapons at home knowing he was disturbed and he took those weapons and committed an atrocity. if you can't do something about the gun magnets in america after something of that magnitude. i think it is good it is trending on twitter for 36,000. it is good that people see his rant and it is good that people see the ugly side of the extreme elements of the gun lobby in america because they have had their way far too long. this is not about taking away an american family or parent's right to have a gun at home to protect themselves or a family. that is what the second amendment is about. it is not about these killing machines. and nor is it about magazines as in the case of the shooter in aurora. that is why he was able to kill so many people. then there are other issues involving the reduced funding for mental health and the gun sales in america having no background checks. it is absolute luna
